Recently we have been discussing different strategies to teach students how to write the two I have researched are Sitton Spelling and the Be Efficient and Integrate Basic Skills.
I found both strategies to be extremely beneficial for students. Sitton Spelling is a great program which has the students building on suffixes which in return broadens their vocabulary. Also with this program, the students are constantly being held accountable for their grammer and spelling. This strategy is different from your normal Friday mastery test, in the sense that the students are constantly building on words and each students word list differs from week to week.
With Be Efficient and Integrate Basic Skills, this explains how students need to focus on their audience and clearly use their voices throughout their writing. When teaching student to become better writers, we as the teachers need to demonstrate and verbally walk our students through our thinking process. Doing this will help them understand why we chose the words and sentence structures we did, and will help them relate to the topic more easily. We also need to help our students understand that when writing they need to consider the audience they are writing too. In many aspects this helps the students write more easily.

Building New Knowledge Jan 24th - Jan 28th
Word Sorts. This is one of the most interesting things I have learned this week in Language Arts. Not sure what a word sort is. When doing a Word Sort, you take words that will be presented in the new unit or lesson, and place then randomly on the chalk board, you then have your students determine a logical category of categories for the words. This is a great way to have your students activate prior knowledge and become geared and excited for a new lesson.
I also found the video clip Teacher Accountability: A Student Teacher's Perspective to be quiet influential. As prospective Teacher's we all have the weight of the PSSA Testings. As stated in the clip "Data's a wonderful teaching piece, It's going to guide your practice. It's going to help you become a better teacher, and its going to help your students become more prepared. If you look at PSSA's in this manner and not that you have messed up, your only going to better yourself and your students. Data is going to help you make better decisions in the way you teach. Although you may feel disappointed that your students did not score as well as you would have liked, its motivation to fix the areas that students are having difficulty with. For instance how will you alter your lesson to improve students understanding.
I found this clip to be very insightful and I hope you will too !

21st Century Classroom
As you approach a 21st century classroom, you should be overwhelmed with excitement and curiosity. As you open the door to many students futures, you should see students who are actively engaged in various activities, to the naked eye, it may almost look like chaos however there is a method to the madness.
In a 21st Century Classroom, there will be various learning centers throughout the room which are adapted to all students learning abilities and styles. The materials should be readily available for all students, and technology should be at their finger tips. For students to gain the most out of their learning experience, they should be giving every opportunity to voice their opinions, thoughts or ideas they have towards running the classroom. When managing the classroom, again students should be given choice, they may either choose to demonstrate the correct behavior, or they will loose out on their value time. The room should reflect the students personality as well. They should feel valued when entering the room, this can be done by displaying the students work. A classroom is a room for learning, so the walls should never be bare, there should be educational, and motivational posters placed around the room.
When in a 21st century classroom, the students should be hard at work at all times. However, not all students will be working on the same materials, this is where the learning centers will come into play. At no time should a students be sitting at his/her desk without something educational close by, they should have every opportunity to be actively engaged in learning activities at all times.
While the students are doing their activities at the learning centers or at their desks, this allows the teacher valuable one on one time with students who may be struggling or need additional help. This is also the primary time which allows the teacher to monitor her students and check their work to ensure they are understanding all concepts.
In all, a 21st Century Classroom all who enter will be actively engaged in various learning activities, and will leave the students hungry to learn more !
